It is surprising that a yacht of that size and expense didn't have a thought out plan of defense - especially when going through an area known for its dangers.
I think the tug thought it was far enough offshore to avoid problems.

At the risk of seeming to blame the victims (I'm not) and certainly not knowing all the story...
Are these sailers (yacht and tug crew) not armed when they travel through the worse place on the planet for piracy?

I've never ever eperienced a more civil situation as a room full of armed men, like at the infamous "gun shows" of the US.
