We saw this when sailing on the Solent this weekend.
Now usually a tug tows an oil tanker like this one but here it seems to be the other way round. It looked a bit like a dinghy bobbing along behind a yacht or a car behind a Winnebago.
Any ideas what might be happening?

It's the nautical equivalent of a hand brake turn.
As the tanker passes Cowes and turns up towards the West Bramble Cardinal the tug pulls the stern round, similar for outbound shipping
Aha! Thanks for that - we should have worked it out as we sailed pretty much through that turning circle (there was no traffic out there)
they were not about to hang out the laundry?
.... or was it a trap for those pesky yachts that keep sailing too close to shipping?
