Today this blog is forced to run an important official announcement on behalf of Buff Staysail:
G'day all! Buff Staysail here - Buff by name and Buff by nature!
There's been all sorts of gossip going around recently that I just had to come out and clear things up. All this talk about me really being a Syrian lesbian is complete and utter B- ..... er, I mean, complete rubbish.
This is Buff Staysail you are talking about! I am a well known and respected sailing journo and also CEO, Chairman and founder of that ground breaking and potential Tech Crunch winning company, Buff Enterprises!!
Lets keep the gap between fact and fiction clear, ok?
This is Buff Staysail, for real, over and out!

I've been thinking about the same question. But there are all shades of grey in how closely a blogger's public persona matches that of the writer.
Most bloggers (probably) are not making a conscious effort to write something as deliberately misleading as the Syrian lesbian blog. But don't we all shade the truth a bit, if nothing else by leaving out some aspects of our life that we don't cover on the blog?
And then there is Noodle, whose blog is apparently by a very sexy buxom lady living in a virtual world. At least we know that that is a fiction. She/he could be anybody. My theory is that he/she is an old geezer from Denmark. But she could be a Syrian lesbian for all I know.
One of the benefits of Blogging is the control it allows about what information you post, and hence what people see, while still being open to all on the web. You can construct the identity(s) you want to show, and degree of reality.
I think that is fine as long as you are clear as to what is true and what made-up.
Compare this to Facebook that restricts who can see your posts but makes anonymity - and fiction - much harder.
As to Noodle, I'm very suspicious of the fact that I've never seen her and you at the same time
I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I found out that Taru is a 300-lb truck driver from Cincinatti.
Doh! Not Buff but Buffy!
Let's think what might work: blonde kick-ass super hero(ine), with vampires and cheer leaders? Much more blog friendly :)
Hmmm. Maybe we could start a treasure hunt to identify which boating blog is the nearest to the "Syrian lesbian" kind of fraud.
Noodle obviously isn't a real person. And Sarah Tall and Proud isn't really blogging from the Shady Pines Home for the Violently Senile. But who is trying to fool us by pretending to be someone totally different from whom they purport to be... and getting away with it.
An interesting blog! It explains a lot about Ann Coulter ;)
There is no real explanation for Ann Coulter unless she is really some 25-year-old guy in a wig doing a drag political satire act.
