I think it's very cool that the Soviet Union had an actual 'hero' medal, which Gagarin won for completing his historic flight.
Anyone can claim to be a hero, but it's much easier to substantiate that when you have the medal to prove it.
Imagine how handy such a thing would be for resolving barroom disputes or for getting parking validated. And it must have looked great on an online dating resume:
Six feet, muscular build, trim, non-smoker, Hero of the Soviet Union.
O Docker. You can buy your own hero medal for 39 cents on amazon.com.
But I do agree with you. I think the US should have a "Hero of the Republic" medal. But it would probably end up getting awarded to the likes of the Koch brothers and Barry Bonds.
